Laboratory Safety

Features

  • KU MAI has a Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) suite in Haworth Hall Room 1043B. KU’s Department of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS), has assessed the risks of and evaluated our competence in the use of, biological agents with respect to safety and compliance per university policy and procedures, as well as standard biological safety practices. This assessment resulted in Hazardous Material Research Approval (EHS Permit # ermbs05302017-1). This approval covers all of live animal and human cell, tissue, and culture work.
  • KU MAI has a Nano-Hood in Haworth Hall Room 1043F for use in the preparation of nanomaterials. It facilitates the control of nano-aerosol particulates when manipulating nanoparticles.
  • KU’s  EHS has assessed the risks of and evaluated our competence in the use of hazardous chemicals with respect to safety and compliance per university policy and procedures, as well as standard and hazardous chemical safety practices. This assessment resulted in Hazardous Chemical Research Approval (EHS Permit # ermcs07092015-1). This approval covers chemical safety hoods and all fixed human and animal cell and tissue preparation work.
  • KU’s EHS has assessed the risks of and evaluated our competence in the use of laser systems and non-beam hazards with respect to safety and compliance per university policy and procedures, as well as standard laser systems and non-beam hazards safety practices. This assessment resulted in Laser and Radiation Approval (EHS Permit # ROS07-LS-2018). This approval covers all-optical and laser-based microscopy, electron microscopy, electron microscopy X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy work.
